Leadership Fellows

Welcome to the 2021-2022 Civic Engagement Leadership Fellows Cohort!

What is Leadership Fellows?

The Leadership Fellows Program is a one year academic program offered through Student Activities and Leadership Programs (SALP) at Portland State University. The goals of the Leadership Fellows Program are to develop your leadership skills to better serve campus; develop understanding, knowledge, and skills that you can use in your career and community work; and to get to know fellow student leaders and share insights. The ASPSU cohort will focus on civic engagement and expand on leadership skills relevant to student government.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to participate in Leadership Fellows?

Yes, if you wish to earn your Educational Leadership Service Award (ELSA) for your position in ASPSU, one of the requirements is to take the Civic Engagement Leadership Fellows course and pass it each term (fall, winter, spring) in order to receive your award. Learn more in the ASPSU Terms & Conditions.

Do I have to take it for course credit?

It is not mandatory, but you can! Leadership Fellows students can sign up for 3 credits per quarter (total of 6 credits per academic year) of PA409. Credits for Leadership Fellows are set at 3 per quarter and cannot be split (i.e., only taking 1 or 2 credits per term is not an option). The credits apply as the practicum requirement for the Civic Leadership Minor, but can also apply as general credits if needed. If you opt in for credits you will need to pay for the course but you will still receive your ELSA award if you complete your Leadership Fellows work and attend the sessions. When you take the course for credit it is a pass/no pass grade. Before making the decision to register for these credits you should consult your academic advisor.

Where do I turn in my assignments?

All course materials and assignments are in D2L. Make sure to check the "ongoing" tab and select the "Civic Engagement Leadership Fellows 2021-2022" course! This is still being updated but should be up by week 2 of fall term at the latest.

Do I have to attend the Monday AND Friday session?

No, you only need to attend 1 of the sessions. But if you missed your session one day, you can attend the other one! They are the same class.

What happens if I do not pass my Civic Engagement Leadership Fellows class?

Unfortunately, that would mean your ELSA would be retracted, meaning you would be sent a bill for the total amount of your award. This can be avoided and accommodations can be made, but only if you communicate with your advisor Madeline ahead of time! Don't wait until the last minute to inform your advisor of your absence, and any extra credit work to makeup your absence will be determined on a case by case basis.
