Importance of In Person Research
The highlight of your participation in research is meeting researchers and the staff on the research team to learn more about various career opportunities in STEM. We believe it is important that you work in person in order to gain the type of experience that will allow you to understand different roles in research and gain valuable knowledge about how research happens. While occasionally some efforts can be done outside the lab or research group, such as reading literature or writing a report, you should plan to be in the lab at least one day a week. If you have any questions or need assistance asking for more in person work please email Shandee Dixon (shandee@pdx.edu).
RLC Hour Requirements (Summer)
Required RLC Hours: 250
Dates: 7/1-9/24
RLC Hour Requirements (Fall, Winter, & Spring)
Required Hours: 100 hours per term
This breaks down to roughly 10 hours a week* However, that is only a suggestion for how to schedule your time each week. Based on your research project needs, you may work >10 hours one week and <10 hours another week to work up to 100 hours total per term. This will depend on the mutually agreed upon schedule you have established with your RLC mentor.
*If you take the requirement, 100 hours per term, and divide it by the 10 weeks of the term it equals 10 hours a week.
* Students are not required to work in their RLC during university holidays and closures, unless you need that time to get to the minimum number of hours required
Finals Week and Breaks
You are not required by BUILD to work in your RLC over the break but it is a great opportunity to make up hours without balancing classes. You must communicate any time off during finals week and break with your RLC.

Rollover Requests
You may work with your RLC to request that extra hours are rolled over into the next term (terminology: Rollover Request)
There are NO “rollover” hours without prior approval from the Scholar Success Committee.
Trainees can rollover excess hours (any hours over the required 100) from one term to another in Program Year 2 (ex: 120 hours completed in Fall and the Scholar wants the extra 20 hours applied to Winter)
If you anticipate having an excess of RLC hours in one term and insufficient hours in a following term in the same academic year, submit a Request to Rollover RLC Hours to SSC for consideration. You can also submit a rollover request just in case.
The request must be made in partnership with your Research Mentor. Forms submitted without your Research Mentor’s signature will not be accepted or considered. Additionally, signatures from RLC Staff other than your Research Mentor will not be accepted or considered.
Excess hours from the Academic Year (fall, winter, spring) cannot be applied to Summer Immersion or the following Academic Year.
Excess Summer Induction RLC hours cannot be applied to the following Academic Year.
Maximum Rollover Hours: 50 (Requests for more than 50 hours will be denied without consideration)
How to Submit a Rollover Request
Have a conversation with your Research Mentor about rolling over hours.
Complete the BUILD EXITO Rollover Request Form form & collect your Research Mentor's signature (wet signature or electronic platform such as DocHub
