Students who demonstrate academic competency will be considered eligible for promotion to the next grade level. Academic competency is indicated by: use of criterion referenced tests, teacher observation, course grades, and attendance in grades K-5. Attendance Standard - More than 10 days of unexcused absences may result in recommendation for retention.
District Standard K-5 - Mastery of 90% of State C3 Standards (PASS or CCSS) in reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies, and with a minimum grade of “D”. Promotion of special education students shall be determined by each student’s individualized education program (IEP) team. Students with limited English proficiency who have not met promotion standards may be promoted on the recommendation of the building language team (bilingual staff, classroom teacher and providing an academic intervention plan is in place).
At the end of each school year, the Britton I.T. Building Placement Team consisting of the classroom teacher, special education teacher (if applicable), and the principal will make decisions related to each individual student and their retention. Timelines and student deficiency reports to parents are critical. Parent conferences and/or documentation of correspondences sent by U.S. Mail are required. Documentation of parental contact/notification is essential for a student to be considered for retention.
