Grading must be a meaningful practice with a purpose in order for it to be a justifiable/worthwhile procedure. All grades recorded in Infinite Campus should be assessments that are used to gauge student progress toward skill mastery. Under no circumstances should grades be used as punishment.
Grades should be entered, at a minimum, weekly into Infinite Campus. Three grades per subject per week are required. Special education teachers in areas of service rendered will be responsible for giving grades to their special education students. The special education teacher will give the grades to the homeroom teacher to input in Infinite Campus. Please keep in mind that there should be no reference to a special education assignment written anywhere on the report card or cumulative folder.
Student intervention is required on an individual basis when a student is at risk of failure, has poor attendance, scores below standard test scores, has a lack of motivation, or is suspected of having a disability. All interventions should be discussed with the administrator and documented with frequent updates to parents/guardians. Protect yourself from parents saying “I didn’t know my child was struggling.” Additionally, dated, personalized, and graded work samples should be maintained on all students for Open House/Parent Conferences which may be given to the parent in addition to the daily work that is sent home with the student.
STUDENT EVALUATION AND GRADING
The Oklahoma City Public School District provides an instructional program that enables all students to learn. High priority is given to learning experiences that serve as a foundation for a child’s total educational development (reading, writing, computing, etc.), as well as the stimulation of intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and aesthetic appreciation. The Board believes that grades and grading practices should be administered in a fair, equitable, and consistent manner. The evaluation of student progress is based upon skill mastery. Each discipline is represented by instructional objectives and is described in a curriculum outline.
Student evaluation and grades are based on daily classroom performance, homework, classroom tests, assessments of Oklahoma State Testing Program(OSTP), attendance, and other required activities and projects. The Oklahoma City Public Schools uses an electronic grade reporting system that rounds all students’ grades to the nearest full numerical grade value. Students who do not meet district standards will receive “NG” (No Grade), “NC” (No Credit), or “I” (Incomplete) until all requirements are met. Generally, “NG” and others need to be made up by the end of the subsequent quarter. Parents are to receive a formal notification when their child does not meet the requirements to receive a passing grade. Such notification should be sent no later than two weeks before the grading period ends.
ALL GRADES HAVE MOVED TO STANDARDS-BASED GRADING
A performance assessment based on state and national standards is used to measure progress and mastery of OAS. OKCPS PK & K programs are designed to meet student needs and all areas of development: social and emotional, physical, language and literacy, and intellectual. Skill mastery symbol key can be found on the progress/report cards and in the OKCPS Student-Parent Handbook.
Performance Indicators of “S” (satisfactory) or “I” (Improvement needed) are given in the areas of Work/Study Habits and Social Growth. The letter grading system for students in grades 1 through 5 is identical to the numerical grade value of grades 6‐12.
DOCUMENTATION FOR STUDENT GRADES
Teachers are expected to maintain student folders on each student representing the daily classroom work supporting assigned grades. On file should be a parent-signed copy of the discipline plan, any discipline referrals, and a log reflecting parent contact. Grades earned by students must be supported by daily classroom work and should be in harmony with standardized test scores for each student. A wide disparity between these two data points should be the RARE exception.
Documentation is not an option, but an essential part of your job as a teaching professional. No student will fail without proper documentation of parent contact, notes sent home, student classwork representative of skill deficiency, behavioral documentation, etc.
When entering number scores for a grade into Infinite Campus, no ZEROS shall be entered. If a student does not hand in an assignment or fails an assignment, a score of 50 will be the lowest number entered. See Mr. Ruzzoli for clarifications or questions.
