Students should be escorted to specials (Art, Music, PE, STEAM and Library). Classroom teachers or aides are responsible for prompt/timely arrival and pick-up to and from these classes. Pre-K Teacher Assistants are expected to go to Specials with their class. Students will not be kept from attending these classes to complete classroom work or as punishment. Your colleague has plans for each student during their designated time and these experiences are invaluable for the development of our students. That being said, if there is an unusual situation, please work with your colleagues to do what is best for our students. In many cases, a simple conversation can ensure that everyone’s needs are met.
Specials/Supplementary teachers are responsible for students in their care during the designated time(s)—this includes discipline, assembly participation, etc. If a special area teacher encounters a problem with a student and a referral needs to be written, it is the special area teacher's responsibility to write that referral as he/she witnessed the incident. This includes making phone calls to parents, etc. This is extremely important with frequent flyers to have that documentation that disruptions occur with other individuals on the campus, not solely with the classroom teacher.
