Any student who is suspected of having skill deficiencies will be referred to our Response to Intervention process (RtI). If adequate interventions are not effective and/or sustainable, a student may be referred to Special Education. Teachers will coordinate with the RtI coordinator, school psychologist, principal, & parent(s)/guardian(s) to coordinate the Tier III meeting where consent to test will be attained and the special education referral process will begin. This is subject to change based on OKCPS RtI Policy.
Students who qualify for special education services: Only students with identified special academic and/or social needs will be served by the special education program. Special education is not a “dumping ground” for students who have not been taught and have poor academic or social behavior. Further, while students served through special education at Martin Luther King Elementary will remain in the regular education teacher’s classroom they will participate in any activity or lesson taking place and that teacher will be responsible for the academic progress of the student in all areas not served by their special education program. The special education teacher in areas of service rendered will be responsible for giving grades to their special education students. The special education teacher will record grades in Infinite Campus. Both the special education teacher and the general education teacher will collaborate frequently to coordinate instruction aligned to a student's specific individualized education plan (IEP).
