The contractual work day is from 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Principal, secretary, & Pre-K assistants are contracted from 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Each Tuesday is reserved for staff meetings and/or professional development activities, with the first Monday of each month reserved for professional development activities. All staff is expected to attend staff meetings. Staff are also expected to attend Open House, parent/teacher conferences, and other scheduled events. Other extended day activities will be contracted on an individual basis with assigned hours.
All staff are expected to report to work on time each day. Please sign in when you arrive and out when you leave, keeping our register current and accurate. Staff reporting late MUST notify the principal or designee and be sure to sign in with accurate time when arriving. Teachers and assistants should be in the classroom no later than 8:00 a.m. All morning work should be displayed and ready for students who will be released to the classrooms at 8:00 a.m. All staff are expected to be highly visible and student focused throughout the day, as such, please plan to be outside of your classroom door to greet students as they enter. Remember, your smiling face may be the first they have seen since they left you last! This initial interaction is essential to keep our halls orderly and supervised and to set the tone for the rest of the school day for our students.
Leaving the building during contract hours is highly discouraged. Planning time for all teachers is designated for work-related activities (planning, co-teaching, observing colleagues, etc.). Understandably, emergencies occur. If something comes up that necessitates you to leave campus, please notify the principal or designee, make arrangements for your students and any duties you will miss, and be sure to sign out with the accurate time. Staff are allowed to leave campus for lunch provided they can do so in their 30-minute allotted time.
All children MUST be supervised at all times throughout the school day. If it becomes necessary for you to leave the classroom for a personal reason, make sure your class is monitored while you are away. Leaving class to call parents is not appropriate; please use planning time for this task.
No outside visitors should be on the MLK Campus without prior permission from your administrators. This includes spouses, significant others, friends, or family, including your own children. There are times when an emergency arises and a need to request permission. Each request is handled on a case-by-case basis. It is each staff member's responsibility at MLK to report visitors to your admin team prior to them arriving on campus. Do not leave your admin team blindsided.
