Foliage and other organic waste that comes directly from the groves and gardens is converted on site into compost that heads right back into the gardens it came from not, only reducing pollution and energy usage with the elimination of travel, but also ensuring that everything produced in the gardens and groves is 100% organic produce. Overall, it also enhances soil health, conserves water, and creates a more self-sufficient and resilient garden, enriching this precious space in the NYU Florence campus.
The Community Farm is made up of the olive groves and the walled garden, the Pomario, supplying the on-site cafeteria with fresh, zero-miles produce. It represents a wonderful example of sustainable farming for didactic purposes. In the Spring, if you like the idea of working in the vegetable garden, reach out to Nick at nd15@nyu.edu, to engage in planting and sow seeds that will grow to maturity during the Spring in time to be harvested, cooked and served at the cafeteria before the Semester is finished. This is an amazing opportunity for students to connect with nature during our break from Manhattan and its lack of green space!
