Because of the differences in European traffic flow, road signs, ZTL (limited traffic zones), insurance, and liability laws, NYU Florence strongly discourages the rental of cars, mopeds, or other vehicles by students who are not accustomed to driving in Europe.
NYU cannot assist in the event of legal or mechanical difficulties, and students are bound by all local laws.
Florence is a highly walkable city, especially in the historic center, where most streets are best explored on foot. That said, it’s important to stay alert while walking.
Always use pedestrian crossings, which are marked by wide white stripes on the road. Be sure to watch for pedestrian signals, and pay close attention to the flow of traffic, especially at intersections and roundabouts. Sidewalks in Florence can be narrow or uneven, so walk carefully and be cautious when stepping into the street. Keep in mind that Italian drivers can be more assertive than what you may be used to, so never assume they will stop unless they clearly signal that they will.
