There are two main taxi companies in Florence: 4390 and 4242. While taxis can be expensive, they are a safe and reliable option for getting home late at night when buses are no longer running. Are are some things you should take into consideration when using a taxi service:
You cannot hail a cab on the street in Florence. Instead, you must either go to a taxi stand (marked with an orange "TAXI" sign) or call one of the companies at 055 4390 or 055 4242. Taxi stands are located at several key points in the city, including Santa Maria Novella Train Station and the main squares in the city center, among other busy areas. For reference, see the map below.
When calling a taxi, after providing the address to the operator, they will tell you the name of the taxi coming to pick you up (e.g., "Parigi 23" - which will be displayed on a sticker on the cab's door) and give you an estimated arrival time.
Be sure to take note of the taxi company and the name of the vehicle (e.g., Company: 4242, Taxi Name: Monaco 20). This information is helpful in case you leave something behind or need to report an issue.
Taxi fares may include additional charges for luggage, more than a certain number of passengers, nighttime or holiday service, trips outside the city limits, or if the taxi was called in advance, among others.
After 9:00 PM, women traveling alone can receive a 10% discount on the taxi fare. Be sure to ask the driver about this if applicable.
If no taxis are available when you call, consider going to the nearest hotel and asking the concierge to call one for you. If that's not possible, try calling again from a residential address, as taxis may be less willing to pick up from bars or clubs.
Staff at the campus gates or reception can also assist you with calling or booking a taxi. If you know in advance that you’ll need one, it’s best to book at least 24 hours ahead.
