If a major crisis occurs, please be aware that there are several steps that students must take in order for NYU to be able to assist them:
Make contact with the OSL or, if you are on campus, seek out a staff member. If possible, the OSL will call all students with information (please provide your cell numbers as soon as you have them).
Contact your family by the quickest means possible to let them know that you’re okay. Oftentimes during crises, the best way to do this is via Internet.
Monitor your cell phones and e-mail accounts for messages from NYU Public Safety, the Director of the program, and from the OSL. All relevant announcements and updates will also be posted at Villa Natalia and Villa Ulivi.
Maintain a low profile until you have gathered official information and received instructions. Don’t rely on reports provided by word of mouth or rumors. The most reliable sources of information and advice are local authorities, NYU Public Safety, NYU Florence staff, and official postings on the State Department website.
Call the OSL for information.

If you are indoors:
Remain calm
Do not run outdoors
Stay in the indoor location in which you find yourself and crawl under a sturdy table, moving as close to the perimeter walls of the room as possible to avoid the risk of the floor collapsing. Alternatively, seek refuge in a space in an entryway near a load-bearing wall, or in the doorway of a load-bearing wall.
Stay away from windows, mirrors, glass cabinets, hanging light fixtures, machinery, bookshelves, and appliances to avoid moving and falling objects
If you are in a corridor or stairwell, enter the closest room
After the earthquake and when the order to evacuate is given, evacuate the building without using elevators and proceed to the designated meeting point
While on your way to the meeting point: Open doors carefully and check the stability of floors, stairs, and stairwells before shifting your entire body weight to these surfaces
Move along walls, including when walking down stairs, since these areas are sturdier
Check for cracks in the walls – horizontal cracks are a sign of instability of the external wall and are therefore more dangerous
Do not use elevators
Do not use lighters or open flame tools (there could be a gas leak)
Do not disseminate information unless you have direct knowledge of a situation
Move away from the building immediately and go to the designated meeting point following evacuation procedures. Do not walk along the external walls of the building because they could collapse
If you are outdoors:
Remain calm
Move away from buildings, trees, lamp posts, and power lines because they could fall and cause injury
Find a place where there is nothing over your head; if you can’t find such a location, crawl under something sturdy, like a benchIf an earthquake occurs, please be aware that there are several steps that you must take in order for NYU to be able to assist you:
