Mills College at Northeastern University actively fosters and implements recruitment and faculty professional development efforts that support the hiring and retention of faculty who represent and support diversity and excellence.  

 

Recruiting Diverse Faculty. Mills College at Northeastern University works to actively seek out and recruit diverse candidates for faculty and staff positions. This recruitment effort involves reaching out to professional organizations, attending conferences that focus on diversity, and advertising positions in media outlets that reach diverse audiences. Mills College at Northeastern has only recently become one of the ten colleges at Northeastern University, and as such, has not had the opportunity to provide dedicated faculty recruitment and professional development for the Mills College at Northeastern, School of Education credential programs. However, Mills College at Northeastern University will align with Northeastern’s Vision of Diversity for all recruitment efforts.  

 

Hiring Diverse Faculty. Hiring a diverse faculty for Mills College at Northeastern University credential programs and in general is an essential strand within a broader Presidential Action Plan that aims to “[build] a diverse and inclusive community is central to Northeastern’s mission because diversity of thought, culture, and viewpoint is essential to learning and growth.” Another strand is a large set of university programs and initiatives intended to enhance the university’s diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion publishes multiple resources for faculty, staff, and students. Among these are hiring for diversity recruitment websites, anti-racism resources, and mandatory racial and cultural literacy training, as well as data about diversity and results from a 2021 Diversity & Equity Climate Survey Report.  

 

Mills College at Northeastern University’s primary faculty governance document is the Northeastern University Faculty Handbook, which outlines policies for faculty, including matters pertaining to recruitment and faculty advancement.


 

Retaining Diverse Faculty. Northeastern University provides faculty, staff, and students with a large network of support groups, training, and benefits to advance the university’s DEI initiatives. Employee resource groups and mentorship programs help diverse employees connect with one another and feel supported within the university community. Additionally, the university provides resources and funding to help our diverse network succeed.
