Entry Requirements
Successful completion of the National 5 biology course at grade A-C is required.
Studying Maths at Higher level is recommended.
Course content: what will you learn?
Candidates develop an understanding of DNA and how the structure of the genome leads to the basis of evolution and biodiversity. Genomics is studied as one of the major scientific advances in recent times. Metabolic pathways and their control are considered along with the conditions in which organisms survive and their means of coping with these. The interdependence and complex interactions between organisms is explored and sustainable food production, with the fundamental process of photosynthesis at its core, is investigated.
Teaching – what will you do?
Much of the course will be teacher-led but it also uses an experimental and investigative approach to develop knowledge and understanding of concepts in biology.
Assessment – how will you be assessed?
The course assessment has three components totalling 140 marks:
· Component 1: question paper 1 (multiple choice) – worth 25 marks
· Component 2: question paper 2 – worth 95 marks
· Component 3: assignment – worth 20 marks.
For the assignment component, you will research a topic and produce a report based on your research. The research stage must involve experimental work which allows measurements to be made. You must also gather data/information from the internet, books or journals.
Both the question papers and the assignment are set and externally marked by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).
The grade awarded is based on the total marks achieved across course assessment.
The course assessment is graded A-D.
Homework
You will be given regular homework tasks, e.g. practice questions, research and revision tasks.
Progression – what can you do next?
Students who achieve a pass in Higher Biology at grade A-B can progress to Advanced Higher Biology in S6.
A pass in Higher Maths A-C is recommended.
Careers
Biology qualifications are essential for many careers including Medicine, Dentistry, Marine Biology, Zoology and many more.
