Course level
In S3 Biology you will be working at Level 4. It is recommended that you have an average of 50% or more in your S1 and S2 topic tests, and that you have attained Level 3 Maths in S2.
Your S2 Science teacher will advise you on whether S3 Biology is an appropriate level of course for you.
Course Content: What Will You Learn?
Cell Biology
You will learn about:
Four different cells and their structures and cell division. This will include viewing cells under a microscope.
Plant Biology
You will learn about:
Sexual and asexual reproduction in plants; the development of plants; the structure and dispersal of seeds; the nitrogen cycle and fertiliser design.
Animal Biology:
You will learn about:
Life cycles; homeostasis of temperature and blood glucose; Adaptations and learned behaviour
Genetics
You will learn about:
DNA structure; how DNA is passed between generations; genes and how they control your characteristics and Genetic engineering. You will also learn about examples of controversial biological procedures.
Biology in Action
You will learn about:
Enzymes and microorganisms and their use in industry.
Biodiversity and the distribution of organisms
You will learn about:
Ecological terminology; food chains and food webs; competition; sampling techniques; human impact on biodiversity; indicator species and photosynthesis.
Teaching – What Will You Do?
Much of the course will be teacher-led but you will also be involved in a variety of tasks including practical experiments & investigations, written work, research and presentation tasks.
Assessment – How Will You Be Assessed?
You will be assessed as follows:
· Unit assessments, covering knowledge & understanding and problem solving.
· Practical investigation, including planning, carrying out and reporting on an experiment.
· End of course exam covering the first five units which will be used as an indicator of whether you should progress to National 4 or National 5 if choosing biology in S4.
Homework
You will be given regular homework tasks, such as practice questions, research, and revision tasks.
Progression – What Can You Do Next?
Students who achieve Level 4 in S3 can progress on to National 5 Biology in S4. Pupils who are working towards achieving Level 4 would be recommended to pursue National 4 Biology in S4, with the potential to continue on to National 5 Biology in S5.
