Welcome to the Nicolson Institute Maths Department.
Our goal is to inspire a love for maths and help our learners develop essential problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
On this page you will find information and materials for all of the courses we offer.
We have set up a Google Classroom for each course that we offer.
The Google Classroom is a valuable resource that contains a huge bank of resources to aid pupils with their revision and consolidate learning, allows parents/carers to see topics that are coming up and allows pupils to catch up on any material that they may miss.
Pupils will be issued their class code at the start of each year.
In S1 to S3, pupils follow a broad and balanced Mathematics curriculum aligned with Curriculum for Excellence (CfE). Our focus is on developing numeracy skills, mathematical understanding, and problem-solving strategies across the key areas of Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measure, and Data Handling.
UKMT Maths Challenge
The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) challenges are a set of maths competitions students of different ages and skill levels. These include the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Challenges, featuring multiple-choice questions that test problem-solving skills. Participants can earn certificates and progress to further rounds like the Mathematical Olympiads, gaining national and international recognition. The UKMT challenges promote a love for maths and enhance logical reasoning and creativity.
In the most recent UKMT challenge, we had 26 S3 pupils participate in the Intermediate Challenge and 15 achieved a Bronze or Silver award!
The next challenge is the UKMT Junior Challenge on Thursday 1st May.
