Introduction to the Department
We are concerned with education of the physical and education through the physical. We attempt to do this by engaging our pupils in rewarding, interesting and enjoyable physical activities. We believe sport/physical activity enhances the quality of life for all ages and that is our prime purpose.
We are fortunate to have excellent facilities with access to an all-weather floodlit synthetic pitch, fitness gym, games hall, swimming pool and running track. We try to cater for the needs of all our pupils but we cannot achieve the impossible. We need the cooperation of parents and guardians with regard to pupils being prepared with the proper kit etc.
Closely linked to the PE program is an extensive choice of after school clubs and, whatever the level of ability, pupils are encouraged to attend for the main purpose of enjoyment and physical and mental health.
Courses Offered in the Department
From S1 to S4 all pupils receive 2 periods per week (50 minutes) of "core" PE.
Those who wish to specialise have the opportunity to take a National 3, 4 or 5 course in PE in S3 for a further 3 periods, in S4 this increases to 4 periods per week.
In S5/6, qualifications at National 3, 4, 5 and Higher Grade are on offer for those intending to follow a 'sporting' career.
All S5 pupils receive 1 period of "core" PE per week. S6 pupils have the opportunity to opt in to 1 period of "core" PE per week.
The Nicolson Institute, PE Department – Pupil Participation Policy
The routines to be put in place are intended to minimise the amount of teaching time lost in dealing with any non-participants in class.
· These make sure learning is as continuous as possible throughout any injury or illness.
(any long term injury or illness that does not allow a pupil to get changed should be communicated to their Guidance teacher)
It also ensures every pupil is included and involved in every lesson.
Every lesson the pupil should be changed into PE kit for health and safety reasons. This might involve adapting kit for example for going outside.
Parents/carers are not required to supply a note explaining an injury or illness which may limit the child’s participation in the PE lesson. Rather, parents/carers are asked to encourage their child to get changed and then to speak to the teacher at the beginning of the lesson to give details of their condition.
The teacher will then find an alternative appropriate activity for the pupil to do during the lesson to ensure learning is as uninterrupted as possible. These might be coaching, filming, taking photographs, refereeing, completing observation schedules, timing activities, recording scores and tallying scoring averages.
This Policy ensures that good self-discipline and organisational skills are built up and forgetting kit does not become an issue.
Learners will never be excluded from the class or their friendship groups.
PE Staff will:
Support every pupil to manage any injury/condition as best as possible.
Ensure every pupil is as engaged as possible in the learning of the class.
Ensure learning is maintained at a good pace.
