School Dress Code
Our school uniform promotes a real sense of school identity, shared values, self-confidence
and a shared sense of community. Our uniform is actively supported by our pupils, parents
and the Parent Council and is an important part of our ethos.
The school uniform is:
• School blazer
• School tie and white shirt
• Black V-neck jersey with school crest (Senior school)
• Royal (S1/2) or Navy Blue (S3-6) sweatshirt
• White polo shirt
• Black trousers (not jeans, leggings or tracksuit trousers)
• Black skirt
• Royal or Navy Blue sweatshirt
• Black shoes (no trainers) for formal occasions
Formal Occasions:
The traditional uniform of white shirt, school tie, black trousers or skirt and black shoes should be worn for formal events, such as prizegivings.
Everyday Wear:
Most wear the smart-casual uniform daily. Sweatshirts and polo shirts are available for purchase directly from the school shop.
Uniform can be purchased from the school shop (linked above). Further information can beobtained from our school office.
Pre-Loved Uniform Scheme:
We also operate a pre-loved uniform scheme, available to all families. This operates on a donation-only basis (if desired). To request items, please email: nicolsoninstitute@gnes.net.
PE Kit
It is important that pupils come prepared to learn and for PE this requires appropriate clothing. All jewellery should be removed. Pupils who are not participating in PE must have a note or a medical certificate. Pupils who are unable to participate in practical PE should still bring their kit to allow them to assist in the lesson by refereeing, keeping scores or assisting with the distribution of equipment. This ensures that they are still able to take part in some way in the work of the class and do not miss out on the knowledge and understanding of the course.
There are forms of dress that are unacceptable in school, such as items of clothing which:
• Potentially encourage factions (such as football colours)
• Could cause offence (such as anti-religious symbolism or political slogans)
• Could cause health and safety difficulties (such as loose fitting clothing, jewellery or flammable material)
• Could cause damage to flooring
• Carry advertising particularly for alcohol or tobacco
• Could be used to inflict damage on other pupils
