Outwith the class, the Gaelic Department work alongside other Gaelic agencies, such as CnaG, to promote extra-curricular activities, school trips, The Mod and debates
The Nicolson Institute Gaelic Choir takes part in the Local Mod and Royal National Mod. They participate in the unison, harmony and puirt-a-beul competitions. The choir travel to the Royal Mod every year and have been to places all over Scotland.
The Nicolson Institute participates in the National Gaelic Debate competition each year. They debate about many different topics and a number of teams from The Nicolson Institute competed in the final round of the competition at The Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. The school has won the trophy on a number of occasions and are active participants in the competition.
The Nicolson Institute participates in the Local and Royal National Mod annually. Pupils enter various competitions, including literature, solo singing, recitation and psalm singing and have been successful at these competitions both locally and nationally.
