Get Ready for College

The Faculty of Hospitality and Leisure lead the way to produce a Plan for student pre-induction in which they developed a Google Site to promote “Get Ready for College” to build affiliation with the college and their peer group prior to attending their courses.

They created a plan and generated a template which could be used across faculty to promote each area as part of the pre-induction and created online learning modules for all students in their faculty.

This template was utilised in the BLF project to cascade across college to give all learners a similar experience.

Emma Chalmers, Faculty Business Manager says:

"The site was developed as it was recognised that we needed to have a more personal and informative way of engaging with students before they start their course. This was more important than ever as students were not able to come on campus for a normal face to face induction. Ultimately, we wanted to engage students and give them a feeling of being part of CoGC.

It was recognised that some students were starting a course and not necessarily feeling fully prepared. They had not had the opportunity to meet with their lecturers and the wider teams and this gave them the chance to see who various members of staff were and look around our areas.

The content allowed us to give them a taste of the learning platforms they would be using both at home and on campus. We were able to introduce the students to elements of their industry and give them links to industry partners and points of interest.

I worked with the learning technologists and the design team who were able to give me support and directed me to ensure the site is accessible.

The Get Ready for College site would be beneficial to students across all faculties and a template has been produced which has been rolled out across all faculties ".
