Our approach to learning and teaching is informed by the ABC Learning Design model developed at University College London. This approach centres learning design on the student experience, and maps teaching and learning activities to six student learning types; acquisition, collaboration, discussion, investigation/ inquiry, practice and production (commonly used for assessment).

The Learning Designer is a free online tool developed by the same team. Based on the six learning types, it simplifies the process of designing teaching and learning plans (lesson and unit plans). Each plan includes learning outcomes, timings and synchronous and asynchronous learning activities. It also shows a pie chart to highlight the proportion of time allocated to each learning type.
You can collaborate with colleagues, share and download the plans.

The Learning Technologies Team have created a Learning Wheel which maps the learning tools recommend by City of Glasgow College and links them to the six ABC learning types. The wheel maps tools used with Moodle, our VLE, as well as additional recommended tools.
The Lecturer Development Team regularly run webinars and workshops on the ABC Learning Design Model. Visit the Lecturer Development Teams website for more information on learning design and ideas for learning tasks based on the six learning types. The best way to redesign your course is with your own Curriculum Team. Please contact Fiona Balloch (fiona.balloch@cityofglasgowcollege.ac.uk) to arrange a dedicated Learning Design Workshop for Curriculum Teams. In the hands-on workshop, teams familiarise themselves with the ABC Learning Design process and tools. Teams work together to redesign existing courses to include blended learning elements supported by technology. You will learn how to use a visual ‘storyboard’ outlining the type and sequence of learning activities (both online and offline) required to meet the learning outcomes.
