A few coaching skills in your teaching toolkit can go a long way in terms of helping your learners set achievable goals. Implementing these skills can also help build good collegiate relationships and mange conflict. See below a list of some useful basic coaching skills and behaviours with resources, from Anna Close and Jenifer Martin.
Effective Feedback
There are a number of different feedback models & over time, we develop our own ways of giving supportive, constructive feedback.
Listening
The essence of coaching is to provide the Speaker with opportunity to identify an issue and explore solutions for themselves. In order to do this, effective listening is key.
Facilitating a Growth Mindset
When we see a student struggling, the urge to ‘rescue’ them can be very strong. We’ve all been there! However, the danger with this approach is that learners become reliant on lecturers to ‘fix’ things for them and, importantly, don’t discover their own potential to problem-solve. We can help learners develop a Growth as opposed to a Fixed Mindset.

GROW Model
The GROW model can be an effective way to structure a conversation to give the Speaker an opportunity to identify goals and how to achieve them.
