I see a man in his middle age, with sad looking eyes, steady hands, painting alone in a blank white background. He looks like an Italian, with short hair and red beard.
The strokes are rough and saturated, while the background is blank but impure.
The rough strokes symbolize a rough life, with the empty background and the sad eyes showing his loneliness and sadness, with no one there for him, painting alone in the emptiness.
He went through pain, sadness, disappointment, loneliness, and most of all, emotional damage.
While painting this painting, he was letting out all his feelings, painting from his own perspective.
Personally, I would keep the expression of the person and the mood, because it gives out plenty of emotion and meaning. The background however, is quite unsuitable in my view, because I would prefer a darker background with small dark smudges.
