reference photo
pencil-lined draft
strictly followed the reference and outlined accordingly, not much effort needed
colour-outlined version
used marker to confirm all the lines and erased pencil line away
shaded version
added in a little design based on my personal preference
pencil-lined version
didn't really master the skill and idea initially, as it was my first approach towards this new way of drawing. but managed to figure it out eventually.
pencil draft of final painting
managed to finish the draft and the structure of the drawing, with the reference from the style of my 'artist reference'.
painted background
referred to my 'Artist reference' for the choosing of colour and style
final version
figured out what colour to use and how it can affect the feeling and infomation which I would like to express through this drawing.
frame
printed in the dark room, new skill learned.
first painted version
not as good as I expected. I put too much ink and resulted in the lines abit too thick
second painted version
this time the lines were thiner and more ideal. There is also a strong contrast and it further impacted me on the importance of colour in art.

An old gentleman siting at the centre of the painting.
warm & cool colours well-balanced
diverse&Janpanese background. mount Muji, Geisha, village covered with snow, sakura(cherry blossoms) and flowers, divided by the entire background clearly.
The european gentleman was sitting in front of a background with Japanese style. perhaps he is some what related to Japanese culture.
all the pictures in the background are clearly cut and divided. The arrangement looks like the flow of a story.
the colour flow of the background is from cool to warm, while in contrary, the colour flow of the figure is from warm to cool then back to warm.
What story the old gentleman had that makes him an european yet have some relationship with Japanese culture?
Is the background the flow of a story or simply some moments/scene captured?
the background includes spring, summer and winter. why is autumn missing?
why the background choose to include figures lie Geisha?
why the facial expression of the old man so calm while looking downwards(on the floor)?
