outline of face
i first had a photo of my portrait which i traced over with pencil carefully that would just give me the main parts of my face.
carbon copy outline
with the outline of my face with pencil, i traced over it with a ballpoint pen on top of carbon paper, and drawing block at the bottom, which gave me a faint tracing of the outline of my face.
shaded version of portrait
using the carbon copy outline, i shaded in some parts so there could be contrast and shadows and highlights could be seen. this would the be the stencil for the silkscreen printing.
stenciled portrait
i went to the dark room and followed many intricate steps. however, i accidentally spread too much of the blue chemical on top and did not blow it fully dry. thankfully, by the time it was my turn to use the lightbox, it was already dry.
printed silkscreen
i applied blue, yellow and red pigments on the frame and spreaded it a couple of times, achieving a sort of gradient look
double face portrait
I followed the instructions of a video to complete a half side profile, half front profile portrait, though capturing my facial features without a reference was difficult.
process of the half portrait painting
half portrait painting
this was inspired my artist reference. i tried to copy the distinct style of Vincent Van Gogh as can be seen most clearly in the background and the straw hat. i added a cat as i thought the background was too simple.

What do you see?
I see a man in a straw hat with a tight mouth. The whole painting is full of short and bold brushstrokes.
What are the subjects in the Artwork?
The subject of the artwork is the man with the straw hat.
What are the Elements of Art used in the Artwork?
The brush strokes are short and bold and the the painting is full of colours.
Why did you think the artist arranged the subjects in this manner?
The man and the straw hat is the focus of the whole painting so the middle of the painting is the man and the hat.
What do you think the Artist is trying to communicate in the artwork? How does the artwork make you feel?
I think the artist is trying to convey some sort of sadness from the tight mouth and the facial expressions of the man in the straw hat.
Why do you think the Artist emphasised certain element in the work?
I think the artist emphasised the lines as it shows the simplicity of the whole painting.
What are you curious about the Artwork?
Does the straw hat have some sort of signifiance? Why is the man wearing it?
What are you wonder about the Artist's thought processes?
How does the straw hat depict the artist's feelings and meanings?
What is interesting to you about this Artwork? And why?
There is no multiple subjects and is just the man and the straw hat so it might be hard for some meaning to be found in the painting.
Are there any areas such as the title, style, or medium of the artwork that you are unsure and would like to know more?
How does the artist paint such bold strokes and knows where every colour is supposed to be?
