Learning Highlights from the Week
Grade 1 continues to work on efficient strategies for addition and subtraction story problems. Strategies include: count on, count all and to use known math facts. We will be finishing this unit next week and taking our first end of unit assessment.
Grade 2 has been working on using efficient strategies to solve story problems with 2 digit numbers. Strategies include: count on, number lines, and using place value concepts. We will be finishing this unit next week and taking our first end of unit assessment.
This week's reading/spelling groups focused on silent e, short vowel sounds, compound words and open syllables.
We read Sergios Bike and worked on the retell of a story talking about the beginning, middle, end and the author's message.
In writing, we worked on temporal words and how to end a story with action, feeling, hope or a combination. Students have been reading short stories and identifying important parts of a realistic fiction. Next week we will begin writing stories together based on some activities we will be doing in class. We continue to work on our handwriting skills, learning how to form letters neatly and accurately on the line.
Social/Emotional Learning:
This week we talked a lot about perseverance and positive self talk. I often see students get easily discouraged when work feels challenging and they often say " This is boring" or " I don't like math". What they are really saying is, " This is hard". We have been working on positive self talk and strategies that help us persevere through these uncomfortable feelings. This type of stress, is actually healthy stress and is building resilience.

Periodic Reminder to Check Your Child for Lice and Nits
This notice serves as a reminder to check your child’s head for lice periodically. Consider checking weekly. Head lice are tiny, crawling insects that live in the human hair. They do not fly or jump. The females lay eggs called nits on the hair shaft close to the scalp, often at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. The nits are small, oval-shaped specks that can vary from whitish to brownish in color, and are firmly cemented in place and cannot be brushed or flicked away.
Persistent itching of the head and back of the neck can indicate head lice. Most important is the examination of the hair and scalp, especially the nape of the neck and behind the ears, for nits. Lice outbreaks are common in school-aged children. Even the cleanest child can become infested. It is not a sign of poor health habits or being dirty. If you discover lice or nits, ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider about treatment options. School nurses can also answer questions about head lice
