Hello Families,
I hope everyone is staying warm! We had a terrific couple of weeks of learning and fun. Students are busy wrapping up their research and we have begun making our animals.
We had a blast at the UVM game this week and are looking forward to skiing/boarding next week!
Here are our videos from the week:
SHARING
We will start sharing on Feb 2! The theme will be "Things we care about". Students can choose a picture of something that is special to them: family, pets, friends, playing a sport, family trip, their garden etc-anything they LOVE! You can email me the picture and I can print it. We will be making a collage of pictures to display in our room. Sharing is a great way for students to practice sharing information with a speaker voice, practice being a respectful listener and it strengthens our classroom community.
TOYS CONTINUED....:)
Toys are starting to come back to school. Please have your child leave all toys and stuffed animals at home. They become very distracting during the day. We are close to filling our pom-pom jar for a stuffed animal day, so we will be able to enjoy our stuffed friends soon enough!
***Water Bottles-
Keep sending water bottles!
It is so helpful to have water right in the classroom and to eliminate trips out in the hallway. Thank you!
Snacks
If your child gets a school snack it might be helpful to keep a backup snack in their backpack/cubby as some of the cereal choices are not always their favorite! Having a bar or something non-perishable in their backpacks will ensure they always have a snack. The Thursday snack is usually a homemade muffin and that is a fan favorite.
Learning Highlights
First Grade
We kicked off our unit on measurement by measuring each other with unifix cubes! We are currently measuring different lengths of fish and comparing the length to a "keeper" length. Students are finding out how much the fish needs to grow to be a keeper and how much longer it is from the keeper size. They are having a blast!
Grade 2
Second grade is working with place value up to 1000, building and comparing 100's, 10's and 1's and writing in expanded form.
We have two phonics groups, the Dolphins and the Sea Turtles, the Dolphins are learning about multisyllabic words and the Sea Turtles are learning about vowel teams, currently ai and ay.
This week's literacy snapshot:
Sentence Dictation
Students practice writing a sentence at the end of our lessons to practice putting their sound feature words in the context of a sentence. We find that students can often spell in isolation, but have a more difficult time applying phonics skills learned into the context of a sentence. If we are learning about ai and ay, my sentence will contain those features: May I pay for the train ride today? This high leverage activity also reinforces student reading of the skill as they reread their sentence to check for any errors.
We wrote our last chapter of our research reports, fun facts! Some students want to do an additional chapter on the life cycle, however it is not required.
Next week, students will write the all about the author page, make a content page and create a cover.
We have begun the process of making our animals and will also work on creating our savanna environment. Send us your large pieces of cardboard for trees! We will set a date next week!
