Hello Families,
How is it already May? I am in awe of the progress students have made this year! They have worked so hard and their beaming smiles while they read and write say it all, they are SO proud of their accomplishments. We still have several weeks of learning and are revisiting expectations so that we can have a smooth and productive end of the year stretch.
***Water Bottles-
Keep sending water bottles!
It is so helpful to have water right in the classroom and to eliminate trips out in the hallway. Thank you!
Snacks
If your child gets a school snack it might be helpful to keep a backup snack in their backpack/cubby as some of the cereal choices are not always their favorite! Having a bar or something non-perishable in their backpacks will ensure they always have a snack. The Thursday snack is usually a homemade muffin and that is a fan favorite.
Learning Highlights
First Grade
We continue to work with place value concepts, adding and subtracting groups of ten.
13+30
Students are learning to group the tens and add the extras:
10+30=40
40+3=43
We will be starting a unit on telling time and counting money while we continue our learning with place value concepts.
Second grade continues to work with place value up to 1000, building and comparing 100's, 10's and 1's and writing in expanded form.
PHONICS:
The whole class is doing a review of phonics as well as a deep study on syllabication and syllabe types. In our smaller groups we are zooming in on specific phonics concepts such as dipthongs ( au, ow, oy, oi) and suffix endings.
We have begun a new unit on opinion writing. This unit will be taught through a science unit on plants. We are currently listening to books and writing down facts we are learning about different plants. In the coming weeks, students will begin learning to state a claim and back their claim with evidence from a text.
