Hello Families,
Thank you to everyone who came out to the African Savanna Museum. We had a blast and students were shining like stars! What an accomplishment! If your child has not brought their animal home, it is too big to ride the bus. Please feel free to stop by school and pick them up.
We have been reviewing rules and expectations since returning from the February break and settling back into our routines.
We have kicked off our new unit on Families. We have been reading many stories about Families and analyzing character traits. Students are working hard and they are excited to create their own characters and stories.
***Water Bottles-
Keep sending water bottles!
It is so helpful to have water right in the classroom and to eliminate trips out in the hallway. Thank you!
Snacks
If your child gets a school snack it might be helpful to keep a backup snack in their backpack/cubby as some of the cereal choices are not always their favorite! Having a bar or something non-perishable in their backpacks will ensure they always have a snack. The Thursday snack is usually a homemade muffin and that is a fan favorite.
Learning Highlights
First Grade
We have begun a new unit on numeracy. Students are finding the missing addend and solving addition and subtraction problems with efficient strategies. Examples of efficient strategies are: counting on or back from a number or using math facts
( 8+7) If I know 7+7 =14 then 8+7 is just one more.
Second grade continues to work with place value up to 1000, building and comparing 100's, 10's and 1's and writing in expanded form.
PHONICS:
Dolphins Group: suffix endings s/es and er and est.
Sea Turtles: oa/oe and ee/ea
Students are working hard on reading with greater fluency. They are rereading text until it's smooth and fluent. This process helps students learn words that they had to decode on the first read and turn them into sight words for reading with ease.
In addition, they are working identifying characters and their traits.
Students are developing characters for their family stories. We will be learning about beginning, middle and ending of stories over the next several weeks.
