Hello Families,
We are having a blast in first and second grade! Lots of learning and fun happening.
We have dove into researching our animals and are learning many cool facts. They are doing such an incredible job doing their best work. More info in the writing section.
We did our funday Friday Freeze dance writing with power words:
Students continue to have centers in the morning. Students engaged in building and creating, power word writing, playing uno, connect 4 and snowflake making.
We have a couple of fun days coming up before break where we will be celebrating winter with some school wide activities.
.
Water Bottles-Keep sending water bottles!
It is so helpful to have water right in the classroom and to eliminate trips out in the hallway. Thank you!
Snacks
If your child gets a school snack it might be helpful to keep a backup snack in their backpack/cubby as some of the cereal choices are not always their favorite! Having a bar or something non-perishable in their backpacks will ensure they always have a snack. The Thursday snack is usually a homemade muffin and that is a fan favorite.
Learning Highlights
We continue to learn about Executive Functioning skills, our brain's ability to do everyday tasks. Click on the picture for more information around this!
Skills we have covered: Time Management / Task Initiation and Self Control
Perseverance is working through challenges and roadblocks that come up along the way. This means being able to try new strategies, continue working when a task is difficult, and even asking for help, when needed. Strong perseverance skills are necessary for success in all areas of life, as challenges are bound to come up here and there.
First Grade
We continue to focus on combinations of numbers and writing equations. We began learning our double facts with automaticity. We also have learned how to use our ten and doubles facts to combine 3 groups of numbers together in order to solve more efficiently.
Grade 2
Students continue to work on problem solving with double digit numbers and using efficient strategies such as pulling their tens and ones out, adding the tens and then adding the ones.
42+36
40+30=70
2+6=8
70+8=78
This week's reading snapshot highlights a high leverage activity during our phonics/spelling lessons:
Word Chains
We work with word chains twice a week, once with letter tiles and another time using dry erase boards and Elkonin boxes.
From the The Six Shifts website:
"Word chains are one of the most powerful ways to help students deepen their phonics and phonemic awareness skills simultaneously.
When students work with word chains, they perform two tasks. First, they build or write a word dictated to them and then change one sound-spelling to transform it into a new word.
Building word chains requires students to apply phonics skills and draw heavily on phonemic awareness, calling on students to segment, blend, analyze, compare, delete, and substitute sounds.
In other words, word chains are one power-packed multi-sensory practice! "
video of word chains in action coming soon coming soon!
We have learned how to write "hooks" for our introductions and state and connect facts together using the word "to". We also worked on rereading our writing so that we can double check our spelling and punctuation. We have researched the diet and body parts of our animals. Next week we will research their habitat and learn how to write a closing sentence.
