Hello Families,
We had a terrific couple of weeks!
Freeze dance writing with power words and magic e words, "Wow!" fact writing, buddy reading, and research on our animals, it was a busy two weeks!
Students continue to have centers in the morning. Students engaged in building and creating, art, power word writing, kindness notes and making gratitude trees. Check out the pictures to see centers in action!
Friday was extra special with the annual Turkey Trot race and meeting with our classroom buddy room, Ms. Danis' 3/4 class.
I am so thankful that I get to work with such a wonderful group of students. The UCS community is a special and magical place. It was so special to take time the last couple of weeks to focus on what we are grateful for. I hope you enjoy the gratitude trees your child brought home, they made my heart melt!

Water Bottles-Keep sending water bottles!
It is so helpful to have water right in the classroom and to eliminate trips out in the hallway. Thank you!
Snacks
If your child gets a school snack it might be helpful to keep a backup snack in their backpack/cubby as some of the cereal choices are not always their favorite! Having a bar or something non-perishable in their backpacks will ensure they always have a snack. The Thursday snack is usually a homemade muffin and that is a fan favorite.
Learning Highlights
We continue to learn about Executive Functioning skills, our brain's ability to do everyday tasks. Click on the picture for more information around this!
Skills we have covered: Time Management / Task Initiation and Self Control
We will move onto Perseverance after break.
Perseverance is working through challenges and roadblocks that come up along the way. This means being able to try new strategies, continue working when a task is difficult, and even asking for help, when needed. Strong perseverance skills are necessary for success in all areas of life, as challenges are bound to come up here and there.
First Grade
We are focusing on combinations of numbers, writing equations and learning our ten facts with automaticity.
Grade 2
Students continue to work on problem solving with double digit numbers and using efficient strategies such as pulling their tens and ones out, adding the tens and then adding the ones.
42+36
40+30=70
2+6=8
70+8=78
Students have been learning to read and/or write Power Words such as said, have, was, etc. These words do not typically follow regular phonics patterns and require many repetitions of reading and writing. It is a daily activity we practice whole group and is also worked on independently.
Reading Snapshot:
I will be highlighting a different part of our literacy block in the newsletter so that you get a glimpse of what important activities your child is engaged in and how it is strengthening reading and spelling skills.
Elkonin Boxes:
Each week we are using Elkonin Boxes as a tool to help students learn and store information. This activity helps with both reading (decoding) and spelling (encoding). By engaging in both reading and spelling of words with a visual, such as Elkonin Boxes, students are better able to store the information in long term storage. Here is more information and a formal definition from the Six Shifts website.
https://thesixshifts.com/2024/02/elkonin-sound-boxes/
Elkonin boxes, named after the psychologist D.B. Elkonin, are a visual tool designed to support phonemic awareness and strengthen children’s understanding of the alphabetic principle. This series of connected boxes—drawn with one cell for each sound (not each letter) in a word—provides a structured framework for students to locate, visualize, and manipulate the phonemes that make up a particular word.
We have been writing "Wow" facts to add to our "Wow!" board and we learned how to be note takers. Students have been looking for and jotting down notes on information specific to animal body parts. In addition, we are learning to turn these notes into complete sentences for our first chapter in our animal research books.
