Hello Families,
We had a busy week of working and playing. Providing time for students to play and create is so incredibly valuable to their growth and development. Students learn important social and emotional skills through play such as: perspective taking, cooperation, empathy and emotional regulation. During choice time, students have created some retail shops with their homemade crafts and open up at choice time on Fridays. The creativity, cooperation and kindness has been truly remarkable to see. This has been ALL student led, the adults are just doing some shopping! Enjoy your weekend.

Learning Highlights from the Week
Grade 1 continues to work on efficient strategies for addition and subtraction story problems. Strategies include: count on, count all and to use known math facts.
Grade 2 has been working on using efficient strategies to solve story problems with 2 digit numbers. Strategies include: count on, number lines, and using place value concepts.
This week's reading/spelling groups focused on nk, short vowel sounds and closed syllables. Each week we do word chains, write in elkonin boxes, compare features using T charts and read decodable text to support our learning. We also began work on heart words ( words that we learn by heart because they don't follow typical phonics patterns).
We are still working on a system for bringing books and heart words home to practice.
We began reading realistic fiction books and began brainstorming topics for our own stories. Students are excited to write their own personal narratives. Everyone has chosen their first story and began designing their covers. Ask your child what they will be writing about!
Social/Emotional Learning:
This important work is ongoing and tucked into everyday throughout the day. Read alouds during literacy are purposely chosen to support important topics such kindness, perseverance, perspective taking and positive self talk.

Periodic Reminder to Check Your Child for Lice and Nits
This notice serves as a reminder to check your child’s head for lice periodically. Consider checking weekly. Head lice are tiny, crawling insects that live in the human hair. They do not fly or jump. The females lay eggs called nits on the hair shaft close to the scalp, often at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. The nits are small, oval-shaped specks that can vary from whitish to brownish in color, and are firmly cemented in place and cannot be brushed or flicked away.
Persistent itching of the head and back of the neck can indicate head lice. Most important is the examination of the hair and scalp, especially the nape of the neck and behind the ears, for nits. Lice outbreaks are common in school-aged children. Even the cleanest child can become infested. It is not a sign of poor health habits or being dirty. If you discover lice or nits, ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider about treatment options. School nurses can also answer questions about head lice
