Hello Families,
It was wonderful to see many of you during conference time. Thank you for taking the time to meet with me and celebrate and set goals.
Students continue to have explore time in the mornings and are also continuing their learning with Executive Function Skills ( see below).
Each week we set a classroom goal, this week's goal is keeping thoughts in our thought bubble which also ties in nicely with our EF skill of impulsive control. Keeping our thoughts in our thought bubble allows for smoother and more efficient lessons and less interruptions during learning. Students are working on raising their hand when they have something to share.
Water Bottles
Please have your child bring a water bottle to school. Having a water bottle in the classroom allows students to take a drink whenever needed and eliminates time out of the classroom going down the hall to the water fountain. Thank you!
Snacks
If your child gets a school snack it might be helpful to keep a backup snack in their backpack/cubby as some of the cereal choices are not always their favorite! Having a bar or something non-perishable in their backpacks will ensure they always have a snack. The Thursday snack is usually a homemade muffin and that is a fan favorite.
Learning Highlights from the Week
We continue to learn about Executive Functioning skills, our brain's ability to do everyday tasks. Click on the picture for more information around this!
Skills we have covered: Time Management / Task Initiation and Self Control
Time Management and Task Initiation: We learned about how long things should take and how to plan ahead to ensure you have enough time. We practiced everyday things we do in the classroom and timed them! It took less than a minute to line up quietly! We also practiced getting started right away and what to do if you don't know how to start or if it feels hard.
Self- Control
We are learning how to stop, breathe and then make a choice when working through emotions or social conflict.
We are also learning how to raise our hand during lessons in order to reduce blurting out all of our thoughts in our thought bubble. This can make lessons not as efficient and distracts our brains from learning.
Students are doing an INCREDIBLE job learning and strengthening their EF skills. The growth since we have started this learning has been remarkable.
First Grade
We have begun a patterning unit and are reviewing addition and subtraction.
Grade 2
Students are working on problem solving with double digit numbers and using efficient strategies.
We continue to work on our phonics features through spelling and reading them. We had a whole class focus on syllables and what an open and closed syllable is. Students are also learning how to read with a buddy!
We continued work on letter formation and sentence structure. We are getting ready for our informational unit on Animals. Students will learn how to research a topic and will write a report on their animal of choice.
