Hello Families,
Happy New Year,
We are off to a great start! Students are settling back into routines and are working hard. We dove back into our research this week and will be getting ready for our culminating event, date coming soon!
Here is our Funday Friday Freeze Dance writing with power words:
Students continue to have centers in the morning. Students engaged in building and creating, power word writing, games, puzzles and drawing/coloring.
TOYS!
Toys are starting to come back to school. Please have your child leave all toys and stuffed animals at home. They become very distracting during the day. We are close to filling our pom-pom jar for a stuffed animal day, so we will be able to enjoy our stuffed friends soon enough!
***Water Bottles-
Keep sending water bottles!
It is so helpful to have water right in the classroom and to eliminate trips out in the hallway. Thank you!
Snacks
If your child gets a school snack it might be helpful to keep a backup snack in their backpack/cubby as some of the cereal choices are not always their favorite! Having a bar or something non-perishable in their backpacks will ensure they always have a snack. The Thursday snack is usually a homemade muffin and that is a fan favorite.
Learning Highlights
We continue to learn about Executive Functioning skills, our brain's ability to do everyday tasks. Click on the picture for more information around this!
Skills we have covered: Time Management / Task Initiation and Self Control
Perseverance is working through challenges and roadblocks that come up along the way. This means being able to try new strategies, continue working when a task is difficult, and even asking for help, when needed. Strong perseverance skills are necessary for success in all areas of life, as challenges are bound to come up here and there.
First Grade
We are focusing on doubles plus 1 and minus 1 as a classroom goal.
8+8=16 then 8+9 is just one more, 17!
We finished our numeracy unit and will begin measurement next week. Students worked on writing numbers to 120 and filling in number charts. As a celebration for completing our unit, we made number chart robots!
Grade 2
Second grade is solving 2 part missing addend problems. In the first part of their problem they need to add together 2 numbers (34+43). Once they find the total, they then need to find out how many more are needed to get to 100. 77+ _____ = 100.
Students are practicing reading and spelling power words everyday and are learning new phonics features each week. We have 2 groups currently: one learning about r controlled vowels and one learning about multisyllabic words with vowel teams.
This week's reading snapshot highlights a high leverage activity during our phonics/spelling lessons:
Sound Comparisons:
Students make a T-chart to compare sounds. For example, when learning about the r controlled vowel, students may compare or and ar. I will say a word with either sound and they will listen for the sound and write it in the correct column.
Students learned how to write a closing sentence and took notes on their animals habitat using bullet points. Next week, we will turn our notes into sentences and research some fun facts about our animals.
Home-School Folders
We seem to be missing some home-school folders, if you can't find your child's home-school folders, please let me know and I will give them a replacement. Thank you! Please return homefolders on Monday.
