Hello Families,
What a week! We are working on social skills and connection building in the mornings through stations. This week, students explored STEM bins. Students are working on cooperation, turn taking, problem solving and perspective taking all while exploring and playing with their tablemates.
We had the JUFD come to our all school meeting and taught us about fire safety. Mrs. Bernier's class led our all School meeting and did an incredible job, inspiring us for when we will lead in February. We continue to work on our independent skills and working even when an adult is not with us. We began a new learning series on Executive Function skills, learning about organization as our first one! See below for more details!
STUFFED ANIMAL DAY MONDAY!!!!
Our class achieved their goal of quiet, quick clean ups and has earned a stuffed animal day. They may bring a stuffed animal from home that can fit in their backpacks. Please be sure it doesn't make noise as that can be very distracting.
Water Bottles
Please have your child bring a water bottle to school. Having a water bottle in the classroom allows students to take a drink whenever needed and eliminates time out of the classroom going down the hall to the water fountain. Thank you!
Snacks
If your child gets a school snack it might be helpful to keep a backup snack in their backpack/cubby as some of the cereal choices are not always their favorite! Having a bar or something non-perishable in their backpacks will ensure they always have a snack. The Thursday snack is usually a homemade muffin and that is a fan favorite.
Learning Highlights from the Week
We are learning about Executive Functioning skills, our brain's ability to do everyday tasks. Click on the picture for more information around this! We learned about the very important skill of organization and how this skill helps our brains learn. When everything is in its place we have more time for learning and our brains aren't distracted by the mess. Students cleaned their desks and will continue to work on putting things back into their folders so we can easily find what we need. We took pictures of our clean desks and created a bulletin board about how organization helps our brains (see pictures below). Next week we will learn about Task Initiation.
First Grade
We are learning about subtraction and efficient ways to solve story problems.
Grade 2
Students continue to work on number strings and finding efficient strategies to solve them, such as finding groups of 10 or doubles and then adding the extras.
Students are now in groups learning specific literacy skills. Word study groups are: magic e, digraphs and CVC words. Next week we will learn about having a reading partner and begin buddy reading.
We continued learning about letter formation and sentence structure. We also wrote letters to our families this week for open house!
