Hello Families,
Welcome to first and second grade! It has been a fabulous start to the school year! Students have done a remarkable job settling in and learning routines and expectations. We have enjoyed the path and exploring all of the equipment on the playground. We will continue to work on building our community for the next 6 weeks as we follow the Responsive Classroom approach. The RC approach has a strong focus on building relationships, learning about expectations/routines, creating hopes and dreams and learning how to take care of our classroom. In addition, we will be learning about the Zones of Regulation as a tool to help us understand our brains and help us regulate our emotions throughout the day. I look forward to building a healthy and strong community where students feel safe, encouraged and cared about.
Learning Highlights from the Week
We have been exploring math materials and learning how to work cooperatively with our peers at our tables. Starting Tuesday, we will start our routines for math class. This includes switching classes for grade 2. Grade 2 students will either go to Ms. Jones or Ms. L for their math instruction. I will be teaching my grade 1 students along with some of Ms. Jones first grade students.
Our district has adopted a new literacy curriculum called ARC. We will be launching this comprehensive program on Tuesday. The foundation of each reading and writing unit is based on a social studies or science unit. We will kick off our first unit on mapping. This unit will not only focus on mapping, but also on routines, reading habits, writing skills and building background knowledge and vocabulary. In addition, all students will be doing a review of phonics skills.
Expectations
We are learning about classroom expectations and will spend the next several weeks exploring what they look and sound like across the day. We read the book, Following the Group Plan and Listening Larry at School to help us understand the importance of these expectations. Ask your child what it means to listen with your whole body and what it means to follow the group plan.
