Hello Families,
It has been a busy 2 weeks with a lot of learning happening! In the month of November, we will be learning why taking time to be grateful for things is important and will display our gratitude on a classroom gratitude tree. Pictures to come in the next news update! We continue to start our day with morning stations: art making, power word practice, building and creating and playing games such as Candy Land, Uno, Connect Four etc. Students also continue to learn about Executive Functioning skills with a focus on impulse control. See below for more details. We have kicked off our Wild and Endangered animals unit by exploring informational text and finding "Wow" facts. They are so excited to begin their study on an animal! Students are studying African savanna animals and are looking forward to our culminating event at the end of this 9 week unit. More details to come.
Winter Clothing
As winter is approaching and can sneak up on us in an instant, please be sure to send your child with warm clothes.
Water Bottles
Please have your child bring a water bottle to school. Having a water bottle in the classroom allows students to take a drink whenever needed and eliminates time out of the classroom going down the hall to the water fountain. Thank you!
Snacks
If your child gets a school snack it might be helpful to keep a backup snack in their backpack/cubby as some of the cereal choices are not always their favorite! Having a bar or something non-perishable in their backpacks will ensure they always have a snack. The Thursday snack is usually a homemade muffin and that is a fan favorite.
Learning Highlights from the Week
We continue to learn about Executive Functioning skills, our brain's ability to do everyday tasks. Click on the picture for more information around this!
Skills we have covered: Time Management / Task Initiation and Self Control
Time Management and Task Initiation: We learned about how long things should take and how to plan ahead to ensure you have enough time. We practiced everyday things we do in the classroom and timed them! It took less than a minute to line up quietly! We also practiced getting started right away and what to do if you don't know how to start or if it feels hard.
Self- Control
We are learning how to stop, breathe and then make a choice when working through emotions or social conflict.
We are also learning how to raise our hand during lessons in order to reduce blurting out all of our thoughts in our thought bubble. This can make lessons not as efficient and distracts our brains from learning.
Students are doing an INCREDIBLE job learning and strengthening their EF skills. The growth since we have started this learning has been remarkable.
First Grade
We finished our patterning unit and have begun another unit on addition and subtraction. This week we practiced combinations of numbers with a focus on partners to 10.
Grade 2
Students continue to work on problem solving with double digit numbers and using efficient strategies such as pulling their tens and ones out, adding the tens and then adding the ones.
42+36
40+30=70
2+6=8
70+8=78
We have been focusing on silent e and r controlled vowels the past couple of weeks. Students are working on learning to spell and read these features with fluency. They also read and explored informational text with their reading buddies. We are also working on Power Words, which are words that typically don't follow phonics rules ( said ) or are words that are frequently used in written text.
We have begun our Wild and endangered unit from our new literacy program. Students explored informational text and picked their top 3 animals to study. They also found some interesting facts that we call, "Wow" facts. They will find out Monday which animal they will be studying. With this unit, we received many bins of beautiful new texts on animals that the student have been so motivated to read. We will spend the next 9 weeks writing reports on an animal and then preparing our classroom for a culminating event where the students turn our classroom into the savanna and showcase their learning!
