Hello Families,
We had another terrific week in first and second grade. We had a visit from Keith Cote, a state police officer, to talk about gun safety. Please see below for more information.
We kicked off our science unit on sound and light with a couple of experiments and continued working on opinion writing. Students defended their opinions on whether mac & cheese or pizza was tastier. We had so many great reasons for both foods, one in particular caught my attention..."Ooh, it smells so good when pizza is fresh out of the oven". I would agree, I am definitely having pizza for dinner tonight! We ended the week with a "Funday Friday" greeting, the shoe greeting!
Learning Highlights from the Week
First Grade
Students worked on missing addends and combinations of 10.
Second Grade
Students continued work on multiple step addition and subtraction problems and facts to 100.
In reading, groups worked on magic e, vowel teams and open/closed syllables.
We are working on comprehension skills such as retelling a story with important details.
In writing, students learned about using a hamburger as a visual to remember the parts of an opinion unit:
Top bun: stating our opinion
Meat, Cheese, Tomato: reasons
Bottom Bun: closing statement
Students did incredible writing this week.
Next week, we will learn to elaborate on our opinions and write a closing statement.
Science:
We are learning about sound and how vibrations make sounds. We experimented with rulers on a table, making rain with our hands and shaking paper to create vibrations to make sounds.

Officer Cote Visit
We had a visit this week from Keith Cote, a trooper with the Vermont State Police. He spoke with the students about what to do if they ever come across a gun — stop, don’t touch, tell a trusted adult.
If you own a firearm, please be sure it is stored unloaded, locked, and out of children’s reach and sight. Ammunition should be stored separately.
