December 7 th, 2024
This week students settled back into the routines after our break. As I am writing report cards, I am in awe of the learning that has taken place! The gains students have made since the beginning of the school year are remarkable. Feeling very grateful to work with such incredible humans. We have a busy couple weeks ahead with our hip-hop residence,
Learning Highlights from the Week
Grade 1 is working on building teen numbers and counting on. They are learning the meaning of math symbols like +, -, and =. They have learned the equal sign means " the same as" and that both sides of the equal sign need to be balanced. Number equations can be written 2+4=6 or 6=2+4
Grade 2 is exploring place value and building numbers based on place value concepts. They are working on math facts such as doubles and partners to 20.
This week's literacy groups focused on the nasal sound of short /a/ am/an, magic e with the soft can g sound ( rice, huge), s blends ( sl, sm, sk st) and spelling ch with tch ( catch).
We had buddy reading and also worked on spelling and reading high frequency words.
We are working on retelling a story with a beginning, middle, end and giving details from the text.
We continued work on writing personal narratives and had fun doing "The Great Ball Race" as an inspiration to write. Students hopped with a beach ball between their knees from the start to finish line, the cheers and laughter could be heard down the hall! We timed our first round and then did it a second time to see if we could beat our overall time. ( We did!) We then made a story plan to help us remember details, sequence events and use temporal words such as first, then and finally.
Social/Emotional Learning:
We will continue to work on positive self talk and persevering when things feel hard. Academic work can feel hard at times and working through those feelings can also feel equally as hard. We will continue to work on using positive self talk as a strategy.

Periodic Reminder to Check Your Child for Lice and Nits
This notice serves as a reminder to check your child’s head for lice periodically. Consider checking weekly. Head lice are tiny, crawling insects that live in the human hair. They do not fly or jump. The females lay eggs called nits on the hair shaft close to the scalp, often at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. The nits are small, oval-shaped specks that can vary from whitish to brownish in color, and are firmly cemented in place and cannot be brushed or flicked away.
Persistent itching of the head and back of the neck can indicate head lice. Most important is the examination of the hair and scalp, especially the nape of the neck and behind the ears, for nits. Lice outbreaks are common in school-aged children. Even the cleanest child can become infested. It is not a sign of poor health habits or being dirty. If you discover lice or nits, ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider about treatment options. School nurses can also answer questions about head lice
