Nino Salvo is the Managing Director of Riverside Motors. Nino is a fully qualified mechanic holding a Certificate IV Automotive. Nino started Riverside Motors in 1987. Over the 35 years in business, Nino has grown the company having over 5 employees.

Weekly pay: $2240

Average weekly work hours: 60 hours

Duties:

·        Servicing customers at the front counter

·        Organise car parts to get delivered so cars can be fixed

·        Booking in customers with their cars

·        Making sure cars are up to standard before they get given back to the customer

·        Servicing cars and fixing them also if the front isn’t busy with customers

·        Planning and organising the schedule for the day and managing the employees

·        Taking phone calls about inquires and bookings

·        Engine building for performance cars

·        Diagnose problems with cars

Mechanics get two breaks throughout the day they get a morning tea break at 10 o clock for 30 minutes and they get a lunch break at 1 o clock for 45 minutes both of these breaks are paid

At Riverside motors your provided with black polos with the logo short sleeve or long sleeve and a black collared jumper with the logo but you’ll need to buy your own work shorts or pants and hard boots. With the PPE they provide latex gloves and heat protectant gloves to work on the cars and face shields to weld

Mechanics

Nino has 3 fully qualified mechanics who are all full-time workers all having completed their Certificate III in Automotive. They complete numerous tasks throughout the day to ensure all cars are fixed up to a high standard

Weekly pay: $1,436

Average weekly work hours: 45 hours a week

Duties:

·        Detecting and diagnosing faults in engines and parts

·        Fixing transmissions, steering, and checking certain parts of the cars

·        Repairing and replacing worn and defective parts

·        Preforming services e.g. oil changes, engine check, lights, spark plus, air conditioner testing, wheel alignment, wind screen whippers, brake fluid, transmission

·         Reassembling engines and parts after being repaired

·        Car diagnosis

Bookkeeper:

Nino’s wife is the bookkeeper of the Business her name is Cristy. Cristy has no qualifications as a bookkeeper but in Australia you don’t need a certification to become a bookkeeper for a small business. Cristy uses Myob Software to do some of the following tasks.

Average weekly work hours: 45 hours (Cristy chooses her own hours)

VCAL Year 12 work placement student 

Nino has a student from Werribee High who is completing VCAL Year 12 and come’s into Nino’s workshop to do the following

·        General assistance to the qualified mechanics

·        General clean-up of the workshop e.g. (Sweeping, putting things away, taking out the bins)

·        Picks up car parts from local shops

 

Management of OHS in the factory

Riverside Motors is governed by the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 2004. The Managing Director seeks guidance on health and safety matters from the Victoria Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC) and WorkSafe Victoria. As the workshop is a high-risk area, Nino conducts a risk assessment once a week, to make sure everything is in order. To ensure he is meeting the requirements of the OHS Act, Nino utilises several methods of communicating OHS issues and information:

·      Holds weekly meetings with staff to discuss OHS concerns.

·      Display signage within the workshop

·      Sends Risk Assessments to staff and VACC and makes the risk assessments accessible to all staff.

·      Ensures Safety Data Sheet are accessible to staff

·      Supervision and training to all staff an readdresses any concerns.

 

Reporting an incident

·       If the situation is still a high risk or still ongoing you must call triple zero

·       Confirm if the incident is notifiable to the VACC

·       Ensure the incident scene isn’t tampered with until a Worksafe director arrives

·       Report the incident within 48 hours must be written

·       Save a copy of the incident form and keep it on file

·       If there has been a bigger incident Nino must contact the VACC and Worksafe Victoria

·       The workplace must provide additional rights and protections to all employees

·        prohibit businesses from using insurance or indemnity arrangements to avoid liability

·       SDS (safety data sheet) is needed in the factory to list all the hazardous chemicals in the factory

·       Ensures that the SDS can be accessed easily

·       Making records of all risk assessments and incident reports

·       Provide training, supervision, and information to all employees
