Business Summary:
Global lift hire consists of two people working and operating all different types of equipment for short or long periods of time. Located in Werribee, they travel to surrounding suburbs to help anyone they can.
The business is 5 years old and was started by Matt and Phil. Global Lift Hire works with many associations that help the community. Through word of mouth, their business grew which give them a chance to spread their business and just help people in need and or those who can’t afford safe lifts for their business.
Personnel information:
Phil has been in the mechanical industry for over 22 years and Matt has been operating this business for just over 5 years but both have been working at another business for 14 years. Matt has been working locally in Werribee since the beginning and is now 39 years old and continuing to learn new things every day. As a duo, Matt and Phil complete most of the daily tasks themselves. However, the dividing of work is based on their interests and expertise.

Management and OHS Concerns:
Phil and Matt are both OHS officers and they both communicate with each other on what can be done to improve the safety of their customers but more importantly themselves. Matt and Phil communicate OHS information directly in conversation and paperwork. Phil and Matt communicate with WorkSafe to ensure that everything we use for safety in terms of guidelines and regulations is current and in conjunction with the OHS Act 2004. Within their factory, OHS information is all over the place. Anyone who enters is under the supervision of either Matt or Phil. In many areas of the workplace, there are signs that display warnings such as, chemical spills, hardhat wearing areas, safety goggles needed, gloves, etc.
When someone comes to place an order for a piece of equipment, Matt and Phil take the following steps:
Investigate what piece of equipment is required
If the location of the job is suitable for the equipment
If a person is a licenced driver operator
Have an understanding of how the piece of equipment works
Complete rental paperwork that includes OHS information and public liability
Provide customers with PPE which includes hardhats, harnesses and fluoro or hi-vis gear to protect yourself and others from danger.
Provide a risk assessment for the equipment
Provide a set of detailed instructions that clearly outline how to operate the lift to make sure no one gets hurt.
Provide a detailed diagram on how to check for faults when working to make sure you don't put anyone in danger.
Employment opportunities: You will need general experience in how to operate small and large lifts and machinery of that sort. An auto mechanic qualification is needed to legally operate the machinery. Work experience is not on our books at the moment and can be something that my partner and myself look forward to implementing in the near future. The future of the industry of lift hiring is getting bigger and bigger as more and more buildings are getting developed at a quicker rate. Also, mechanics are growing but a steep learning curve may be needed as more advanced technologies are coming out everyday.
Award:
The award that Global Lift Hire fall under is the Automotive Mechanics receive is MA000089: Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail.
Matt and Phil are entitled to:
Sick leave
Breaks
Public holidays.
Allowances
Allowances: When working for someone under an apprenticeship, the employer pays for your training fees for TAFE including all materials and books needed for studying and the lessons. A dirty work allowance is used when working within machinery where dirt, smells and other gunk can form and mess your clothes. So an extra $0.66 on top of your regular wage is given as a minimum to basically thank for working in that environment as everyone knows how unpleasant it can be. Goggles reimbursement. This is to get some money back on purchasing goggles when working with liquids or welding and some other sort of dangerous tasks. Tools reimbursement. This is to get some money back on tools that you would need to purchase because your employer doesn't have them or doesn't have enough to give out.
Pay and wages: Mechanics with 20 + years of experience earn the largest wage of $26.38 an hour and mechanics with 1 year or under earn the lowest wage of $19.64. This means that the average wage for a mechanic is $24.32 an hour. A Mechanic with 20 + years of experience gives you around $78,000 + a year and a Mechanic with 1 year or less experience gives you around $39,000. This means that the average annual wage for a mechanic would be around $54,000.
Job longevity: You would begin working for someone if you don't have an apprenticeship. This would then go for around 4 years if all goes well and while working for that employer for 4 years you will learn new things on the way which would be used to your advantage when applying for another job once your apprenticeship has finished. When applying for a job as a mechanic you would want to include the TAFE you have attended and who your employer was for your apprenticeship. Including what you did at your apprenticeship and what you learnt. Then if employed you will start to learn what the job flows like with how the employees work but not what you did in the job. This would be already known when working for your apprenticeship. There is a decline in the future for this industry as more and more people are switching for other jobs.
