5th-Grade Art

SCIENCE ILLUSTRATION: Earth & Space Science

The Lesson: As students explore the commonalities between science and art, as well as the ways in which each domain supports the other, the introduction of scientific illustration was presented. And while the original lesson plan was less "cartoon-based" than the final product presents, through student-inquiry, it evolved to incorporate personification as a means of communicating intent more effectively. For this assignment, the 5th-Grade students created a scientific illustration that explained on of the scientific concepts learned in 5th-Grade Earth and Space Science.

Lesson Objectives: Students can observe and discuss how visual art and design exist in a shared contemporary world as they identify various methods of planning for visual art and design and reflect on how intended meaning influences the artmaking process (Visual Arts - 2020 Colorado Academic Standards, 2020).
