The Lesson: Following an examination of artwork created by four contemporary cartoonist, comparing styles in messaging as well as character design, students were tasked with creating a personal comic strip depicting a story of themselves and or their family celebrating their favorite holiday. Subsequent to their drafting of a "comic strip script," students then designed appropriate characters to be used in their final comic strip. Because the art displayed on the previous page were captured from students' 'character design' pages, the characters identified on those pages may vary from those presented in the final comic strips displayed below.
Lesson Objectives: Students can identify and describe how visual art and design communicate meaning between any subject, discipline, event or issue as they recognize how the human experience is expressed in diverse ways and prepare works of visual art and design for presentation (Visual Arts - 2020 Colorado Academic Standards, 2020).
