CREATING A "CARTOUCHE"
The Lesson: Following a brief overview of Egyptian Art, students were introduced to a basic version of Egyptian hieroglyphics and the purpose they served. Students then became acquainted the "cartouche." A detail found within many Egyptian carvings, the cartouche was believed to possess a magical power to protect the name within it from evil spirits. Inspired by the cartouche form and believed function, students used hieroglyphs to draw a cartouche containing their own names.
Lesson Objectives: Students can discuss how visual art and design are used to remember and document personal stories and feelings and students can recognize that artists intentionally choose materials to help tell their stories (Visual Arts - 2020 Colorado Academic Standards, 2020).
