The Lesson: Following the reading of "The Crayon Box that Talked," by Shane DeRolf, the 2nd-Grade students discussed the ways in which people can use visual art to tell stories. With an emphasis on their own perspective regarding the "personalities" of colors, students were then tasked with creating a "Crayon Party" drawing that illustrates them and their friends or family as "crayons"; using the colors THEY feel best represents each person in their drawing.
Lesson Objectives: Students can discover how similar ideas can be expressed in multiple ways (Visual Arts - 2020 Colorado Academic Standards, 2020).
