To sum up my life now, I teach 6th grade computer applications, 7th grade financial literacy, 8th grade financial literacy/podcasting/blogging/multimedia. I coach High School football, basketball, and track. I am married and currently have 2 dogs. I am a big Cowboys fan, I like Michigan and Kentucky for college, not a fanatic just enjoy watching them. I am more of a fan of wherever the kids I coach go. I am eventually going to go to every NFL stadium, at 8 and counting. I go to 1 a year.
An interesting fact most people do not know is that I was born in Florida. However, I was raised right here in Council Bluffs. From Junior High into High School, I have competed in about every sport you can possibly do. By my Junior year of High school I had it narrowed down to 2 sports football and swimming.
I went to Abraham Lincoln High School, besides sports I also competed in DECA(business competition). The teachers who taught business at AL were my favorite teachers, so it was a no brainer to do DECA. They are the reasons I wanted to be become a teacher. Many of the coaches I had at AL at the reasons I wanted to become a coach.
After high school I went to College at Coe College. My original plan was to become an accountant because my high school accounting teacher was awesome. In college I quickly realized it was boring and changed my major to Business administration. Once again because my high school business teachers were awesome. With about 1 year in college left, I also decided I wanted to teach.
After I graduated with a business administration degree and coaching endorsement from Coe. I came back home to coach football and track at LC while I attended night classes at Buena Vista at the IW campus. Talk about some busy days, worked as a substitute teacher or at a glass shop during the day then go coach and finally night classes. Just a couple of years ago I finished up my masters with curriculum development. I took the classes with a couple of other friends/teachers.
Once I received my teaching degree, I substitute taught for another couple years so I could continue to coach at LC. I was a summer away from joining teach for America when a job finally opened up at LC so I took it, which is the same job I am currently doing now. The only difference now, is that I am doing more financial literacy classes than I do technology classes.
I love all sports. I go to as many high school sporting events as I can. I run the speed and agility training at LC in the summer so I enjoy going to watch those kids compete, even the ones that are not in a sport I coach.
My wife is awesome. I think it took me 30 years to find one because of what I do. There are not a ton of wives/girlfriends out there who want to spend Friday nights at Titan Field or on the road, not many that want to spend a Thursday night home alone because I do not get home until late from a track meet or a basketball game, and not many that want to spend weekends breaking down film or home alone because of Drake/state track.
Some interesting things that came full circle-
My business/computer teacher at AL was Mr. Norman he later became my advisor while I was finishing my teaching degree here in town.
Mr/Coach Witte was an assistant football coach (he coached TEs which was one of my positions) while I was playing at AL, he now coaches with me here at LC.
Coach Duggan was the Offensive Coordinator while I was at AL and I now coach with him here at LC.
You never know who you will need or come back around to see in life. That is why you should be respectful to everyone.
