Mr. Dickinson

Teaching:

  • This is year five of teaching for me, all of which have been spent at LCMS.
  • I attended UNO for undergrad and truly loved my time there. I worked on campus as a resident assistant for three years and also worked at an after-school program called the Hope Center.
  • I initially started out college as a construction management major because I love hands-on projects. Eventually I realized that my strengths are people and books, so I switched first to elementary education, then graduated with a degree in secondary education with endorsements in language arts and history.
  • This summer I received my Master’s in Educational Leadership, which I hope to use to step into an administrative role down the road.
  • My favorite part of teaching language arts is that it allows me to cover a wide variety of topics. I don’t consider myself to be a literature or grammar expert, but I do consider myself an expert learner. I would much rather explore intriguing topics with students than be up in front lecturing, so my class is very hands-on and involves lots of collaboration and inquiry.
  • Coaching high school cross country and middle school girls track and field are highlights of my year.

Personal:

  • My wife, Avery, moved to Council Bluffs a year ago and love the community. We have an 11-month-old daughter named Chase! My wife is a physical therapist at Jennie Edmunson here in town.
  • My mom is a retired teacher and inspired me to enter the profession. My dad is a farmer who instilled in me a strong work ethic and a respect for others.
  • I’m the third of four kids and am the oddball in terms of profession. My older brother and sister are both nurses and my little sister is finishing physician assistant school.
  • I love reading books! I usually try to read 20 a year to keep up with my students and to keep learning! My favorites are Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and the Harry Potter series.
  • When I’m not reading, I enjoy working on projects around the house, playing ultimate frisbee with friends, and watching The Office. Occasionally you’ll also find me out for a run or hiking local trails.
  • I have attended Citylight church for many years. I also sponsor the Fellowship of Christian Athletes group at the middle school. We meet together on a regular basis, conduct service projects, and host fun youth athletic events.
  • Over the summer, my wife and I spent several weeks in Colorado while she was on a clinical rotation. Our highlights were visiting eight National Parks and climbing two 14,000 foot mountains.

Past:

  • I grew up on a farm near Beebeetown, Iowa and went to Logan-Magnolia high school
  • It was a small school, so I was in everything from musicals to jazz band to football and basketball. I enjoyed running hurdles and high jumping in track and field the most.
  • 4-H took up my summer with completing projects, raising pigs, and preparing for the county fair.
