Before my career in education…
· Grew up in Neola, Iowa and graduated from Tri-Center High School in 1990.
· Played all sports in high school – basketball was my favorite sport. Played basketball briefly in college and continued to play baseball during the summers. My passion for baseball grow as I got older.
· Three biggest influences in my life outside my family were Mr. Ratigan, Coach Cochran, Coach Schelling and Mr. Nanninga.
· Was the youngest of five kids in my family – two older brothers and two older sisters
· Drove a 1986 Cutlass in high school – drove around town for hours at a time and always with one hand on the wheel and a slight lean to the right. Cool was cool.
· Struggled to figure out what I wanted to do – started out majoring in accounting and then political science. Bad choices – wasn’t for me. Knew I wanted to be around people, loved to write and wanted to coach – next thing I knew I was a Language Arts teacher and a coach.
In education…
- First teaching job – high school English at West Central HS in Stuart, IA as well as head baseball coach.
- Other teaching positions – HS & MS English/LA at Tri-Center and Wilson Middle School while coaching various sports
- Other administrative positions – MS/HS Principal at Fremont-Mills, Assistant Principal at Thomas Jefferson
- Why education? School was always a positive place for me – lucky enough to have positive classroom experiences, loved activities and was fortunate in that the adults I encountered were always positive. I have always loved school environment.
- Why now? Love the ability to create an environment that teachers enjoy working, and in turn kids get great experiences. I like to push people to be better and we get that opportunity every day at LCMS.
The “Other” Stuff in My Story…
· Iowa Hawkeye and Boston Red Sox fanatic – yell at the TV type of fanatic.
· Toured Europe at 14 – West Germany, East Germany, Italy, etc. Had a stare down through binoculars with a Communist soldier. I was intimidated. He wasn’t.
· Visited Ireland for a wedding somewhere around 11 years ago.
· Have a nephew that plays for the Toronto Blue Jays.
· Got lost in one of the toughest parts of Chicago once – here to tell the story.
· Jordan over LeBron
· My jogging days are over. I walk now.
