Module 6
This Term we will our inquiry lessons include a sensory journey to ancient Egypt to find out what we can see, hear, feel, smell and taste. As well as this we will be making our own pyramids and replicas of Egyptian artefacts with our own creative twist! We will be getting messy in science, exploring the textures of different rocks and beginning to sift soil and sand, sorting what we find into categories. We will continue to work hard during our maths and literacy focussed individual work sessions, and are very much looking forward to the increased outside learning opportunities that the warmer weather will bring!

LO: I can begin to use familiar tools in simple processes; I can make a choice from a limited range of options (ingredients).
This week in our design and technology focussed inquiry lesson we made cheese on toast! The class enjoyed chopping the cheese and tomatoes, and experiencing some unfamiliar textures and tastes. After the students had prepared their creations, they were sent to the kitchen to be grilled and we enjoyed trying them in our afternoon snack time.
LO: I can learn about artefacts used for farming in ancient Egypt, and can observe the results of my own actions with interest in my inquiry learning.
This week in we explored farming in ancient Egypt, and looked at the importance of the River Nile and the key agricultural inventions within ancient Egyptian civilisation. The students explored our very own replica shaduf, which was a hand-operated device used for lifting water from the Nile into canals that then watered crops. We also explored the importance of the seasonal flooding of the River Nile in the ancient Egyptians' ability to grow crops. The students experimented with our very own replica River Nile to see if they could get this to flood by increasing the water levels!
LO: I can begin to match arrangements of objects to 10 with the correct numicon tile and numeral with adult support.
LO: I can confidently match numicon tiles with numbers 1-5 and can order these correctly with adult support.
LO: I can add and subtract small collections (totals up to three) with adult support.
Students have been working hard on their individual targets during our maths work sessions, and have been focussing on counting and cardinality. The cardinal value of a number refers to the quantity of things it represents, and when children understand the cardinality of numbers they know what the numbers mean in terms of how many things they refer to.
LO: to explore intentional mark-making in a variety of media; to explore unfamiliar textures and express my preferences regarding them.
During our inquiry lessons this week, we explored a carousel of activities and made the most of the summer sun with some outdoor learning! Students chose from: a Tuff tray paddling pool to explore pouring and splashing; a messy-play oobleck Tuff tray to explore different textures and cause & effect; intentional mark-making and colour-mixing; and a footprint paint trail that required balance and an open mind to get our feet messy! Canyon Class were fantastic inquiry explorers in this session and really enjoyed their learning.
L.O: I can explore objects and materials, changing some materials and observing the outcome.
For the science focus in our inquiry lessons this week we looked at the erosion of rocks due to the wind, water, and chemicals. Students used hand-held fans and straws to replicate the wind, and investigated how this might erode their sandcastles. We explored chemical erosion by dropping vinegar onto ice 'rocks' with a pipette, and watched as the ice softened and melted. Finally, we explored water erosion with our very own miniature beach! Students were encouraged to make waves and watch how the sand of the beach moved in response.
Module 4
Canyon Class have had a brilliant Module 4 exploring our key curriculum themes across a range of disciplines! In art we have been focussing on the sculptures of Dame Barbara Hepworth and how they convey ideas about spring through the use of egg-like structures, and students have recreated these in their inquiry learning through different mediums such as cardboard, salt-dough, and sensory Tuff trays. In science our learning has been around exploring the different properties of magnets and what they tell us about the world around us and the forces within it. Students have really enjoyed the tactile element of this learning, and were particularly fond of a lesson where we made magnetic butterflies from paperclips and colourful card! Geography in this module has seen us look at different countries and continents, with students 'visiting' different places through sensory learning that has combined key cultural facets of each place with fundamental geographical concepts. We have also been making a range of different recipes centred around seasonal fruits and vegetables in our design and technology lessons, linking to our wider transdisciplinary theme 'Where we are in space in time'. Students have honed their skills and have very much enjoyed tasting their creations! We have also continued to offer clubs across Phase 2 on a Wednesday afternoon, and students have benefitted greatly from the social interaction this provides and the agency this gives them over their inquiry learning. It has been a wonderful module for all, and we are looking forward to the next one!

The human body can be healthy or unhealthy
Phase 2 has had a wonderful Module 3 and we have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating to explore the key curriculum themes. We continue to host our Wednesday inquiry-based afternoon sessions, exploring different sensory activities to promote independence, social skills and language development. These sessions have been particularly successful and students have formed meaningful friendships within and outside of their classrooms. In Art we have all contributed to creating an Eric Carle inspired masterpiece, based on the different seasons. During our science sessions, we have explored different plants in addition to growing our own class plants. In PSPD we have worked incredibly hard on sharing our space and building relationships which have been reflected in our playtime activities and activity sessions.
We thoroughly enjoyed Storytelling Week during which we all visited different classes to share a sensory session, filled with different props and exciting adventures.
Learning Objective: I can use my chatting sheet to choose lunch.
Learning Objective: I may be nervous, but can take part in new activities with support.

On Wednesday afternoons, students from all cohorts meet to share a brilliant sensory experience focusing on our Transdisciplinary theme ‘Who we are’. Some of our favourite activities have been: pom pom dance classes, messy tuff trays and boom waker club. All of our students have formed meaningful friendships with others in neighbouring classes and have developed new language. We have worked on our social communication skills in addition to a whole host of personal development targets.
In classes we have thoroughly enjoyed exploring Kings and Queens throughout History. From the King of the jungle to His Royal Highness King Charles we have shared sensory sessions including crown craft and creating timelines. In Science we have explored different habitats, some familiar and some further afield. This was particularly exciting when exploring extremely slimy and tactile, stimulating ponds full of forestry and slime. In Religious Studies and PSPD we have explored a number of exciting events such as Diwali, Christmas and celebrating self differences. This term we have enjoyed collaborating together to reach our targets and expand our socialisation and awareness of others. We are particularly looking forward to our huge Christmas event where we will explore and visit different Christmas themed stations after sharing a Phase 2 Christmas dinner!
Learning Objective: I will be able to recall my number bonds to ten with minimal adult support, using manipulatives to help me, I will begin to develop verbal counting to 20.
Learning Objective: I will confidently recall both single and double letter sounds from set 1, and will use these to decode; green words.
Learning Objective: I will begin to recognise and recall the grapheme - phoneme correspondences for Set 1 sounds.
