Defeat of Nazi Germany
The defeat of Nazi Germany reached its climax during the Battle of Berlin, which took place from April 16 to May 2, 1945. As the Red Army launched its final offensive to capture the German capital, Soviet forces encircled the city, determined to bring an end to Hitler’s regime. The battle was characterized by intense urban warfare, with Soviet troops facing fierce resistance from the remnants of the German military and civilian population. Despite the defenders' determination, the overwhelming numbers and firepower of the Red Army proved insurmountable. As they advanced through the ruins of Berlin, the Soviets systematically dismantled German defenses, inching closer to Hitler's bunker where he remained until the end.
With the fall of Berlin imminent, Adolf Hitler’s situation became increasingly desperate. On April 30, 1945, faced with the reality of defeat and the encroaching Soviet forces, he chose to end his life rather than face capture. His suicide marked a symbolic conclusion to the Nazi regime, triggering a rapid collapse of German resistance. Just days later, on May 7, Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allies, officially marking the end of World War II in Europe. The capture of Berlin by the Red Army not only concluded years of brutal conflict but also set the stage for the post-war division of Europe and the beginning of a new geopolitical landscape.
