Introduction

In the decades since the fall of Reconstruction and the establishment of Jim Crow, the question of where African-Americans fit in American culture was a difficult question to answer.  However, the Great Migration, World War I, and the cultural confusion of the 1920s created a perfect storm for a new generation of artists and intellectuals to answer the question: 

"What does it mean to be Black in America?"
