Fifth Party System

Introduction

The economic crisis of the Great Depression created a political crisis.  The Republican Party, which controlled the U.S. government at the time, was blamed for the Great Depression, giving the Democratic Party an opportunity to assert itself.  Out of this crisis would come a political realignment, in which the Democratic Party would be ascendant and its program guiding the country for decades to come.
